Day 94 – 17th April 2018 – Denham

The day was spent packing up camp as we are heading off tomorrow for Carnarvon at an overnight stop on the way to Giralia Station.

We decided to try a bit of night fishing off the jetty in Denham.  Quite a few people come out to the jetty and it is a great atmosphere.  We managed to catch quite a few fish but none that were sizable or worth keeping.  Still a fun night.  We caught some juvenile Pink Snapper, Trickies, Western Butterfish and Trumpeter Grunters.  We tried squidding but didn’t catch any although the jetty is known for night squidding.  The people next to us were catching Snook.

We took the whiting down to the fish cleaning table at night and again the atmosphere was really great.  There was such a mix of people, old and young, there were four young Aboriginal boys that were chatting up a storm and keeping us all entertained.  The eldest boy was filleting some impressive fish.  We all had different fish and we were chatting about where they were caught.  There was a huge Spanish Mackerel, a big Pink Snapper, Western Yellowfin Bream that looked more like a snapper, Baldchin Groper and a Mulloway.  It was pretty funny to see Col filleting the little Whitings when there were such huge fish on the table.  Not that there is anything wrong with Whiting, they just looked so tiny in comparison.

It was great to see the interaction between everyone.  So good to see kids out and about at night that are safe, independent and happy.   There are some really good aspects of a small town life that is a bit sad our kids will not get to experience.
