Day 205 – 6th August 2018 – Darwin

Monday was a public holiday in the NT, called Picnic Day.  It is a day celebrated with horse racing and a Railway Picnic at Adelaide River, though we didn’t actually do either.  When I was reading up about it, I found this info on Wiki that made me laugh….  ‘On Monday 5 October 1936, a train transported people from Darwin to Adelaide River, leaving at 7 am returning at 11 pm. The hotel at Adelaide River recorded record sales and the train was “forced to stop often as a number of male Darwin passengers fell off at various points along the line”‘.  Gold!

It was great to have the first day off work to spend with Mum and catch up.

We took Mum for a walk down at Lee Point and showed her the WWII bunkers on the beach and checked out Lee Point Beach.

We forgot that Mum had come from a much cooler environment and had not had time to adjust to the heat in Darwin so she was ready to head home and rest in the air-conditioned room after our walk.

KD, Col’s boss, kindly invited us all for dinner to her house that evening to try the Barra caught yesterday.  She has an amazing house on the waterfront and the fish was beautiful.  Col filleted it and Hal cooked it.  KD was a very generous host and we enjoyed eating out on the deck overlooking the water while sipping Moet and eating cheese.  Mum does not like fish so opted for pork but wanted to try the Barra and she loved it!  It really was beautiful.  I hadn’t tried it before and was a little disappointed that the Barra I caught was undersized as I was keen to try it, so it worked out really well that KD offered for us to come over to eat it together.  She figured it might take a while for one person to eat a 75cm Barra on her own!   We were happy to help her out.

It’s a hard life here in Darwin, but someone has to live it!
